Custom layout for my journal

I don't know if motherhood has made me dumber or what, but I can't figure out how everybody gets these awesome custom layouts and stuff!  Can anyone help me out or let me borrow their code so I can just see what it looks like?  Wait... I don't even know how to go about FINDING where to edit the code in the first damn place... 

Is there a tutorial on this kind of thing?

Enemy and I both got our layouts from thefulcrum and customised the headers. They have a number of layouts with customisable headers - go here to see. They have super-clear instructions about how to install them. Remember to credit them on your profile if you use - they're awesome and deserve it.

A dear friend made my layout in exchange for smut, lol.

You should check out some of the layout communities on LJ. Many creators don't mind if you tweak the coding as long as you still give them credit. I created a journal specifically for testing my practice efforts, although I will probably stick with my present layout for a long, long time because I loves it.
